Drs. Simon, Haerian, Ludwig, reminding you to protect your mouth this winter

With winter sports under way for a lot of our patients, Drs. Simon, Haerian, Ludwig thought it would be a good time to remind our young athletes wearing braces to take care of both their mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports (and non-contact sports) this winter.
More than half of the seven million sports and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by youth between ages 5 and 24. Sixty-seven percent of parents say their child does not wear a mouth guard, yet, 70 percent say their biggest fear when their child plays is that they will get hurt. Despite the risks, many kids are still not wearing mouth guards and facial protection during games and practices.
Many people think a mouth guard is effective just to protect your teeth. But research has shown mouth guards can also reduce lower jaw impact that causes concussions and other dental injuries. Our staff at the orthodontic office of Drs. Simon, Haerian, & Ludwig, encourage you to head over to the American Association of Orthodontists’ website for a quick primer on the importance of mouth guards and facial protection.

What's the deal with retainers?

If you recently completed treatment at Sylvania & Lambertville Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been removed, we will provide—or have provided you—with retainers. After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime. Here are some things to remember when you receive your retainers:

* Wear your retainers full time, until the doctor instructs otherwise. Wearing your retainers at night ensures that your pearly whites won’t relapse.
* Take your retainers out when eating...and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)
* Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and only a small amount of toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water.
* When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case.
* Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, give us a call immediately.
* Remove retainers when swimming or during any sporting activity in which the retainers could fall out and get broken or lost (cheerleading, basketball, etc.) or when you should be wearing a mouth guard (football, soccer, etc.).

Many folks in consider the beginning of a new year a time to not only reflect on the year that was, but also to set personal goals for the upcoming year. How are you planning to improve your health and happiness in 2012? Our team recommends that you make a New Year’s resolution to benefit your oral health!

It is important that New Year’s resolutions are reasonable and attainable, and that they improve your overall quality of life—for example, did you know that flossing every day is the very best way to prevent periodontal, or gum disease? Using a straw when drinking sugary beverages can also help prevent cavities. There are many small steps that you can take to prevent cavities, oral infections and bad breath.

The importance of regular checkups

Are you brushing and flossing daily properly during your orthodontic treatment? If yes, that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every 3-to-6 months in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing (and visiting our office, of course). Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health, especially during orthodontic treatment.

Your general dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth.

During an oral exam your dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, let us know during your next visit and we will provide a few great references in the greater area!

Getting the Bite Right

In the United States, we take for granted the experienced dental personnel available. However, for the mother of two of our patients who grow up in China, this wasn’t the norm. There was only one dentist and no orthodontist in her rural village. When her upper cuspids (canine/eye teeth) erupted above her other teeth because of lack of space, the dentist came up with a solution. He removed both her cuspids so it would “look better.”

After her daughters went through orthodontic treatment at our office, she asked if there was any solution to her own dental dilemma. By removing two vital teeth on top, her dentists unknowingly created a Class III bite for her. The top arch is designed to fit over the lower, but since her lower arch was larger than her upper, her top teeth fit inside her lower. A Class III bite makes it difficult to eat and can cause problems with the tempomandibular joint (TMJ).

She did not want any teeth removed on the lower or implants on the upper so our doctors developed a treatment plan involving braces and diligent use of elastics. She wore her elastics faithfully and was able to get an amazing correction for a very difficult case. Now mom can eat her food without effort and, as a bonus, has a smile just as engaging as her two daughters.

Open Bite? Case Closed!

Jacob started treatment at the orthodontic office of Drs. Simon, Haerian, and Ludwig when he was 15 years old. He had a Class III Open Bite and needed a palate expander to widen the upper palate and also a face mask to bring it forward. Because he was nearing the completion of growth, we weren’t sure if orthodontic treatment alone would get the job done. If it didn’t, the only other option to get his jaws into a Class I occlusion would be jaw surgery after he was done growing.

Jacob was 100% on board with his treatment plan and faithfully wore his face mask at night and turned the screw mechanism on his palate expander until it was the correct width. When it came time to “fine tune” his occlusion by wearing elastic bands, he never forgot to put them on the upper and lower hooks of his braces. His diligence paid off and he finished one month early AND had his braces removed in time to show off his perfect smile for his senior pictures!

Side Effects of Orthodontic Treatment

When an adult decides to have orthodontic treatment there is usually more to the story than the desire to have straight teeth. In Pamela’s case, it was medically necessary to provide a functional bite. She had undergone orthognathic surgery ten years prior to address the problem but now she could not chew on the left side because the teeth no longer touched.

After her initial exam, our doctors met with Dr. Lark, her dentist, to discuss possible ways to correct her occlusion. Since getting the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) in a comfortable position was crucial to the case, it was imperative that Pamela, her husband, her orthodontists, and her dentist who specializes in TMJ treatment be all on the same page. Our orthodontists worked closely with Dr. Lark to achieve the best occlusion possible for Pam. She wore upper and lower braces for three years as we re-evaluated and repositioned brackets for two years until everyone concerned with her case was satisfied with the result.

Pam’s teeth now come together in a comfortable occlusion on both sides. She can once again chew her food easily and effortlessly. And she is quite pleased with the known side effects of the orthodontic treatment she experienced – a perfect smile!

Halloween Tips from Drs. Simon, Haerian, and Ludwig

Halloween can be a scary time for your teeth. The American Association of Orthodontists offers these tips to keep your teeth safe from decay during the Halloween Season:

• Don't get into a sticky situation....avoid sticky or chewy candy and snacks. These include hard or chewy candies, caramel, licorice, taffy, bubblegum, (even the sugarless kind) and jelly beans.

• Good alternatives for people with braces include soft chocolates, peanut butter cups or other melt-in-your-mouth varieties.

• If you eat sweets, do so in moderation. Don't be tempted to grab another handful from the bowl filled with treats. Parents may want to limit the time during which children eat from the Halloween bowl.

• Regular brushing and flossing are more important than ever during the Halloween season, when teeth may receive more exposure to sugary foods that can cause cavities. People with braces should be especially conscientious about brushing and flossing often.

Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists put together a helpful website that provides important information on protecting your braces, including tips for trick-or-treaters, braces-friendly recipes, facts about braces and treats you should avoid while undergoing orthodontic treatment.

5 Tips to Avoid Plaque

At the offices of Drs. Eugene Simon, André Haerian, and Jennifer Ludwig, we know nobody likes getting plaque on their teeth. Here are five other ways you can avoid that dreaded enemy of the teeth during orthodontic treatment, courtesy of WebMD.

Let’s start with brushing regularly. Brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride-containing toothpaste is vital to a healthy mouth. Make sure you softly brush all the surfaces of your teeth.

Next on the list is flossing daily: a simple daily flossing between teeth clears away plaque before it can cause damage and can also clean plaque at the gum line. Plaque is known to reach the spaces between teeth.

Also, evading a trip to visit the dentist is probably not a great idea. Let’s say you brush and floss daily. You’re still at risk for plaque. With time, the plaque hardens and turns into tartar. Consider visiting your general dentist at least twice a year or as recommended by your dentist, and you have a lower chance of getting cavities or losing your teeth while wearing braces.

You’ll also want to stop avoiding those fruits and veggies. Believe it or not, there are foods out there that play a key role in keeping plaque off our teeth. They include apples, carrots, cucumbers and other raw fruits and vegetables. You can still eat these types of fruits and veggies if you have braces, but be sure to cut them up into bite sized pieces to avoid breaking off brackets.

Finally, before you pick up that candy bar, remember to not give in to your sweet tooth. Consuming sugary drinks or eating candy or other junk food allows sugar to stick to our teeth. The bacteria, then, becomes plaque, which turns into acid and damages our teeth. Avoiding these five bad habits keeps your plaque in check and your mouth as healthy as can be during your orthodontic treatment with Drs. Simon, Haerian, and Ludwig. A Confident Smile

With Meghan’s mouth being so crowded, her Mom harbored serious doubts that correction could be made without extractions -- especially when she knew there was a cuspid stuck somewhere in the palate that would need to enter the mix!

At Meghan’s initial exam at our office, however, Mom was encouraged by Dr. Haerian’s foresight, confidence and with the way he attacked the issue head on. After two months of braces, exposure of the cuspid by Dr. Carroll, and seeing the game plan in action mom began to buy into Dr. Haerian’s vision for Meghan. Now mom is totally sold as Meghan’s smile reflects that beautiful possibility Dr. Haerian envisioned three years before.

Brennan started coming to orthodontic office of Drs. Simon, Haerian, and Ludwig in July of 2003 at age 7 (the age the American Orthodontic Association recommends as a good time to start evaluating a child’s teeth). It was easy to see that he would require orthodontic treatment in the future to correct his severe crowding issues. Our team evaluated him on a yearly basis until he was ready to start treatment at the best optimal time so he would be in braces the least amount of time possible. However, with a very slow eruption pattern, it actually took longer than estimated. We worked with Brennan on every step of that orthodontic journey until the mission was achieved – a beautiful smile!

Breaking bad habits

At the office of Drs. Simon, Haerian, & Ludwig, we know good dental health requires only a few minutes a day. We thought we’d provide some practical advice on how to improve your or your child’s smile between your adjustment visits with Dr. Eugene Simon, Dr. André Haerian, or Dr. Jennifer Ludwig.

Start by brushing your teeth twice a day. Proper brushing techniques are an essential part of maintaining good oral health during your orthodontic treatment, as well as preventing gum disease. More care and time are needed to adequately brush your teeth when you are wearing braces. Brushing daily helps remove decay-causing plaque from tooth surfaces. Please consult our team if you would like us to review brushing techniques with you or your child. The use of a mechanical toothbrush such as a Sonicare or Oral B can aid in removing plaque around braces. Flossing daily will also prevent plaque to build up between the teeth and prevent stains between your teeth. Research has shown the bacteria of gum disease has been linked to coronary artery disease, stroke, diabetes and memory loss. Lastly, we encourage you to throw away old toothbrushes and replace them every 2 or 3 months, or after an illness.

LATEST FALL FASHION!

Jenny came in for her orthodontic appointment this week at the office of Drs. Simon, Haerian, & Ludwig and we just had to take her photo.

Her black “Bling” t-shirt looked perfect with her black skirt, black pumps, and cream colored blazer. It made our day to see someone stepping out in style on their journey to a great smile!

Colten is welcomed into our "Ortho Family"

Colten is one of many children these days that are emotionally sensitive and socially delayed. Doctor visits can be very trying for both him, the doctor, and of course mom! Mom asked that Dr. Jennifer Ludwig do his initial consult because he is less fearful of women. Things went very smoothly because Dr. Ludwig just happens to have a very pleasant, soothing type of personality.

On a subsequent recheck, however, Dr. Ludwig was not available and instead Dr. Haerian came into the room. Dr. Haerian is the direct opposite of Dr. Ludwig. A naturally high energy personality with a great sense of humor, he tends to dominate a space. When he found out that Colten was 11, he patted him on the shoulder and reassured him that he had been 11 once, too. After he had examined his teeth, he explained to mom and Colten what he was checking and why he was waiting before taking action. After Dr. Haerian left the room, Anja, the orthodontic assistant, reiterated what was happening until she was satisfied that Colten was up to speed, too.

Mom told me that after this visit, Colten commented with delight on Dr. Haerian’s bright pink shirt with his name on it and how he must have liked him because he had patted his shoulder. She was happy that Colten felt so comfortable in our office, and we’re just as happy, because having kids feel a part of our “ortho family” is something we all can appreciate.

The Amazing MARA

John’s mom was devastated when the first orthodontist they visited said they would need to wait until John’s growth was complete and then do braces along with orthognathic surgery to correct his severe overbite. Upset at the thought of waiting six years before treatment could begin, she sought a second opinion. She was elated to hear Dr. Jennifer Ludwig’s idea of using a MARA/Hyrax (an appliance for correcting overbites along with a palate expander) to get the job done while he was still growing.

A Good Fit

At the orthodontic office of Drs. Simon, Haerian, & Ludwig, we’re all about a good fit. After all, having teeth lined up properly so they fit together perfectly is what we do best. Jennifer’s mom, however, mentioned at her daughter’s post ortho consult that it was our office that proved to be a good fit for her family. She had a consult originally scheduled at another orthodontic office, but after being treated rudely after a scheduling error, she decided to look elsewhere. She then gave our office a try, and we turned out to be a perfect fit for her and her children.

Having three children go through orthodontics gave mom ample time to get to know the staff and doctors. Her children were always treated in a pleasant and patient manner which she appreciated. She also gave our office kudos for doing something important for people by enhancing their sense of well-being.

Imagining your Life with Invisalign

Are you wondering what Invisalign treatment is really like, and what effect it will have on your day-to-day activities? Will it slur your speech? Will people know you're in treatment? You're not alone in your concerns! Drs. André Haerian, Jennifer Ludwig, Eugene Simon , and our team thought we’d share this list of questions and answers for anyone pondering Invisalign treatment at our office.

How exactly does Invisalign work?

Using 3-D computer imaging technology, Invisalign creates a series of custom-made, clear aligners exclusively for your teeth, based on the treatment plan that we specify for you. Each aligner moves teeth incrementally and is worn for about two weeks, then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved.

Will I experience pain during treatment?
Most people experience temporary discomfort for a few days after a new aligner is placed. This feeling of pressure is normal and is a sign that Invisalign is working by sequentially moving your teeth to their final destination.

Can other people see that I'm in treatment?

One of the benefits of Invisalign is that the aligners are clear. You can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing.

Are there any foods I shouldn’t eat while in treatment?

You can eat normally during the entire course of treatment. One of the advantages of Invisalign is that the aligners are removable. Simply take the aligners out before each meal, brush when you're finished eating, then reinsert the aligners afterward.

What about chewing gum?

We recommend removing your aligners for all meals and snacks, as gum and other chewy substances can stick to the aligners.

How often must I wear my aligners?

Aligners should be worn all day, except when eating, brushing, and flossing.

Will my speech be affected by the aligners?

As with any orthodontic treatment, aligners may temporarily affect your speech. If this does happen, your tongue will adjust within a day or two and your speech should return to normal.

How do I clean my aligners?

The best way to clean your aligners is by brushing and rinsing them in lukewarm water.

How often must I visit the office during treatment?

For most patients, visits every 4-6 weeks are frequent enough for us to determine that your treatment is progressing properly. We will provide you with a specific schedule that supports your individual treatment plan.

Kids Getting Braces at a Younger Age

But these days, kids as old as seven are beginning their orthodontic treatment. Because preadolescent kids are typically not self-conscious, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists suggest it could be a good idea to start early.

Experts, however, say it depends on the treatment required. Some children who get braces at an early age end up in a second phase of treatment, and end up having braces well into their teenage years despite starting young.

Most orthodontic treatment begins between ages nine and 14, and the folks at the AAO estimate most orthodontic treatment lasts from one to three years, with two years being the average. It’s important, however, that children be screened no later than age seven for our doctors to assess what the best age for treatment is.

Orthodontic Emergency Care with Drs. Simon, Haerian, & Ludwig

True orthodontic emergencies are very rare, but when they do occur we are available to you. As a general rule, you should call the office when you experience severe pain or when you have a painful appliance problem that you can't take care of yourself. We’ll be able to schedule an appointment with Dr. Eugene Simon, Dr. Jennifer Ludwig, or Dr. André Haerian.

You might be surprised to learn that you may be able to temporarily solve many problems yourself until you schedule an appointment with Drs. Simon, Haerian, and Ludwig.

The following solutions may help you relieve your discomfort:

Poking Wire: Using a pencil eraser, push the poking wire down or place wax on it to alleviate the discomfort.

Loose Bracket or Band: If your bracket or band is still attached to the wire, you should leave it in place and put wax on it. If the wire comes out entirely, wrap the bracket with a tissue.

Loose Wire: Using a tweezers, try to place your wire back into place. If doing this and using wax does not help, as a last resort use a small fingernail clipper to clip the wire behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened. If your discomfort continues, place wax on it.

Loose Appliance: If your appliance is poking you, place wax on the offending part of your appliance.

Headgear Does Not Fit: Sometimes headgear discomfort is caused by not wearing the headgear as instructed by your orthodontist. Please refer to the instructions provided by your orthodontist. If the facebow is bent, please call our office for assistance. Surprisingly, headgear becomes more comfortable the more it's worn, so be sure you’re getting in the prescribed hours.

General Soreness: When you get your braces on, you may feel general soreness in your mouth and teeth may be tender to biting pressures for three to five days. This can be relieved by rinsing your mouth with a warm salt water mouthwash. Dissolve one teaspoonful of salt in 8 ounces of warm water, and rinse your mouth vigorously. If the tenderness is severe, take aspirin or whatever you normally take for headache or similar pain.

Remember, after alleviating your discomfort, it is still very important that you call our office as soon as possible to schedule a time to repair the problem.

A SCIENCE PROJECT TO SINK YOUR TEETH INTO!

Michael, a patient at the orthodontic office of Drs. Simon, Haerian, & Ludwig, recently finished his orthodontic treatment. Michael’s orthodontic treatment included removing his upper and lower bicuspids and also any remaining baby teeth. After the extractions, Michael asked if he could keep the teeth. No, he didn’t want to put them under his pillow for the Tooth Fairy; he wanted to do a science experiment. During his post-orthodontic consult visit, he told us all about it.

For the project, Michael soaked each tooth in a specific liquid to see how it would react with the tooth. He put Pepsi, Mountain Dew, coffee, orange juice and water in baby food jars and put each tooth in a different solution. After 17 days, he removed the teeth and photographed the results as a comparison to the photos he took of the teeth before the experiment.He found that Pepsi, Mountain Dew and orange juice affected the enamel while coffee only stained the enamel. Water caused no affect at all. All soda pops, whether sugar or diet, weaken the enamel of the tooth. Once enamel is weakened, bacteria can attack those areas to form cavities. Every sip of pop allows an acid attack to occur.

Michael graciously let us display the results of his experiment in our office so that other patients could see how soda pop can negatively affect the enamel of your teeth. We are pleased to have our patients utilize the knowledge gained from orthodontic treatment to help someone else, and we are very happy we put a great smile on Michael’s face in the process!

Mother and Son receive Orthodontic Treatment with Drs. Simon, Haerian, and Ludwig

In 2007, Kelly’s son, Sebastien, had orthodontic treatment at the office of Drs. Simon, Haerian, & Ludwig so he was of course an expert when his mother decided it was time for her to “straighten up, too.” Kelly had put off her own need for treatment until Sebastien was finished. Her dentist, Dr. Hires, kept urging her to pursue orthodontic treatment because the position of her teeth made flossing extremely difficult.

Sebastien was excellent at following our instructions and understood the importance of wearing elastics to align the posterior teeth. Kelly, however, was not as diligent and that extended her total treatment time. It wasn’t until she followed Sebastien’s advice that her bite was lined up enough to get her braces off, too.

The braces are off and now Kelly’s teeth are not only easy to brush and floss; they also look awesome. When correcting crooked teeth and misaligned jaws, the “side effect” just happens to be a very nice one -- a beautiful smile!

When it comes to orthodontic treatments, there are a lot of options to choose from. To illustrate how difficult it can be to decide on the right course of treatment, we’d like to share with you the story of how Ashley and her Mom decided to pursue orthodontic treatment with Drs. Haerian, Ludwig, & Simon.

Ashley’s Mom knew that her daughter would need orthodontic treatment; the only question was when. She got three different opinions and ended up with an orthodontist in Tecumseh. Mom knew that her overbite would need to be addressed but her first concern was the big gap between Ashley’s two front teeth. She had braces placed on the upper four teeth to straighten and close the gap while waiting for all the permanent teeth to come in. When that day finally arrived, Ashley’s mom was shocked to hear the Tecumseh orthodontist insist that the only way to correct her overbite would be with orthognathic surgery. She went for a second opinion in Monroe where the orthodontist wanted to try a removable Frankel appliance but wasn’t very optimistic about the end result.

She then decided to visit Drs. Haerian, Ludwig & Simon where the third time proved to be a charm. We still felt a MARA (Mandibular Advancement Repositioning Appliance) was the best option, but cautioned that her severe overjet was over 7 mm, so surgery after orthodontic treatment remained a possibility. Two years later, the MARA and braces were removed. Ashley’s bite isn’t just acceptable; it’s exceptional! The result also would not have been possible without Ashley’s diligent work at the end wearing elastics to fine tune the fit of her upper and lower teeth. Both Ashley and her Mom are very pleased with the result AND very happy to get a surgery-free perfect smile!

What is the best way to find excellent orthodontic treatment? If you’re a scientist, you could do extensive research and perhaps even a double blind study or two. If you’re a dance instructor with an aesthetic eye, simple observation will suffice.

One of our Moms has double the reason to find a good orthodontist since she has twins with overbites. Luckily, she runs a dance studio that provided her with a plethora of students at just the right age for undergoing orthodontic treatment. She paid attention to who was sporting braces and how their teeth and bite looked after they were finished. She found the children with the best and brightest smiles turned out to be patients of Drs. Simon, Haerian & Ludwig.

Her daughter is finished with Phase I of treatment and is waiting for all her permanent teeth to see if Phase II is necessary. Her son recently was fitted for a MARA. Mom is now patiently waiting until the day that her twins have the best and brightest smiles, too.

A Beauty AND a Beast!

Sophia, a patient of Drs. Simon, Haerian, & Ludwig, recently turned in an outstanding performance in Bedford High School's production of Beauty and the Beast. She really stood out because of her height and the gigantic hat she wore as she sang a solo in the opening act! Plus, she was finally brace-less and was able to show off her perfect smile in style.

She performs just as beautifully on the court as she does on the stage. Volleyball is her game and she excels at being "a beast" as she uses her height to the full advantage to spike the ball. Sophia's smile has always been a memorable one since she even scored the team award of "best smile" while still in braces.

It's awesome to have a patient who is able to shine in such diverse ways and even more awesome to know we helped create that winning smile!

A Festive and Braces-Friendly Recipe to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

If you're planning to spend St. Patrick's Day celebrating your Irish heritage, or just enjoying the festivals, food and "wearing of the green"- we've got a treat for you! Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have a tasty and braces-friendly recipe that is perfect for today. Corned Beef Casserole presents a twist on the traditional St. Patrick's Day corned beef and cabbage, and will surely become a family favorite!

Corned Beef Casserole

Ingredients:

• 1 (8-ounce) package medium egg noodles, uncooked
• 1 (12-ounce) can corned beef
• 1 (10.5- to 14-ounce) can cream of celery soup, undiluted
• ¾ cup milk (use just ½ cup if using larger soup can)
• 1 Tablespoon dried minced onion
• ¼ cup bread crumbs (seasoned or toasted plain)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°. In a saucepan, cook the noodles just until tender; drain. In a large bowl, chop the corned beef into a coarse crumbly texture.

Stir in soup, milk and onion. Grease a 2-quart casserole. Add the noodles and the corned beef mixture and stir together well. Sprinkle the bread crumbs on top.

Bake covered at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Serves 6-8 people.

Try serving the casserole with petite whole green beans from the freezer…or add 1 cup of finely chopped purple cabbage, 1/4 cup diced onion and 2 teaspoons fennel seed or powder for some true Irish flavor.

Foods to Avoid during your Orthodontic Treatment

There are a variety of foods Drs. André Haerian, Jennifer Ludwig, and Eugene Simon want you to avoid while you're wearing braces. Some foods can occasionally damage braces, but certain foods can bend the wires or even break the brackets on your braces. If you’re wearing braces, you should avoid starch, sugar and gummy foods, as these foods can be difficult to remove during brushing. Foods that are high in sugar and starch tend to cause plaque, cavities and even tooth decay.

Avoid tough meats, hard breads and raw vegetables such as carrots and celery. Before long, you'll be able to bite a cucumber again. But you'll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you're wearing braces.

Foods you should avoid include:

• Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
• Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice, chips
• Sticky foods: caramels, gum
• Hard foods: nuts, candy
• Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots

Also, chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces. Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.

What's the difference between a Dentist and an Orthodontist?

"Dentists, Orthodontists, they're all the same right?" We hear our patients asking this question as they wonder about the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist. Before becoming an orthodontist, Drs. Simon, Haerian, and Ludwig all started out in dental school and earned a DDS (dental degree), just like your dentist. After dental school however, Drs. Simon, Haerian, and Ludwig decided they wanted to learn more about orthodontics, which is one of nine specialties within the dental field. So they stayed in school for a few more years and became an expert in orthodontics, which focuses on tooth and jaw alignment and bite problems like overbites and under bites.

Other dental specialties you may have heard of include endodontic (focusing on the soft tissue inside your teeth), periodontic (focusing on the gums and other tissues surrounding your teeth) and prosthodontic (focusing on restoring and replacing damaged teeth).

Ask Drs. Simon, Haerian, & Ludwig: What is Malocclusion?

Malocclusion, or what Drs. Andre Haerian, Eugene Simon and Jennifer Ludwig call “bad bite,” is the improper alignment of teeth and/or jaws. When your teeth and jaws are not properly aligned, it may impact your bite, the ability to properly care for your teeth, your gum tissue health and even your appearance.

Most people experience some degree of malocclusion, but it generally is not severe enough to require corrective measures. If your malocclusion is serious enough, however, treatment may be necessary to correct the issue.

Our doctors will tell you that untreated malocclusion can lead undesirable mouth problems, including tooth decay, gum disease, or chipped and cracked teeth. The most common solution for malocclusion, of course, is orthodontic treatment. The actual course of treatment, including the length of time you will require braces, will be determined by severity of your malocclusion. The goal of your treatment is to move your teeth into the proper position and correct any misalignment in the jaw.

Miss America Party at the office Drs. Simon, Haerian & Ludwig!

It might have been a cold night on January 15th in Sylvania, Ohio, but patients of Drs. Simon, Haerian & Ludwig still managed to have a good time! The Lunch and Learn room in our Sylvania office was transformed with glittering stars and golden garlands as Ohio and Michigan patients alike gathered to cheer on Miss Ohio, Becky Minger, as she competed for the title of Miss America.

Becky underwent years of orthodontic treatment at Drs. Simon, Haerian & Ludwig to correct an overbite; but when the MARA and braces came off, her confidence turned on. Becky’s beauty was always there inside and now that she was no longer self-conscious, it’s reflected on the outside too. Becky had the talent, the smarts, and the look to win Miss Ohio which gave her the chance to compete for numerous scholarships and the coveted title of Miss America.

Even though Miss Ohio and Miss Michigan didn’t make it to the final fifteen, we were very happy to have some of our great patients on board for a night of pizza, popcorn, and paparazzi. We also managed to keep the night going by holding our own pageant in the office. Cara was crowned Miss Ortho Diva with Ali and Erica as runner ups. At the office of Drs. Simon, Haerian and Ludwig orthodontics, we consider ALL of our patients are winners!

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month!

One in four parents says their child has had an injury during an organized sport resulting in a trip to the emergency room, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO. That why Drs. Eugene Simon, Andre Haerian, and Jennifer Ludwig and team at Drs. Simon, Haerian, & Ludwig thought February—also known as National Children’s Dental Health Month—would be great time to remind our patients to be mindful of their braces and teeth while playing sports. Here are a few tips to stay safe on the field this spring, courtesy of the AAO:

1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator

10 tips to keep your BRACES sparklin’ clean!

At the office of Drs. Simon, Haerian, & Ludwig, we always tell our patients that keeping your teeth clean is more important than ever when you have braces. Food bits have more spots than usual to hide in your mouth, so you must be diligent in order to avoid bad breath, swollen gums, discolored teeth and cavities. If you remove plaque regularly during treatment, you'll experience better results and shorter treatment time. Keep plaque at bay with these 10 tips:

1. One tooth at a time. When you brush, take time with each individual tooth – at least 10 seconds each – and pay careful attention to the spots where your teeth touch your braces.

2. It’s all about the angles. Brush the tops of your teeth and braces with your brush angled down toward where they meet. Brush the bottoms of your teeth and braces with your brush angled up.

3. The tooth, the whole tooth, nothing but the tooth. While the front surface of your teeth may seem like the most logical to clean, it’s equally important to clean the inner surface of your teeth (tongue side) as well as the chewing surface. And be sure to clean along your gum line – a key spot for plaque buildup.

4. Step 1: eat, step 2: clean. While you’re in treatment, it’s important to brush after every meal. Bits of food can easily get caught between braces and teeth, and these food bits interact with bacteria in your mouth to cause decay. The longer food is in contact with your teeth, the greater opportunity for plaque to form. If you are eating somewhere that you can’t brush, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.

5. Like a Boy Scout, always be prepared. The easiest way to be sure you can brush after every meal is to get in the habit of taking a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with you wherever you go. Designate a special container just for your teeth-cleaning tools and keep it in your purse, backpack, or laptop case.

6. Remove the moving parts. If you have elastic bands or headgear, remove these parts before you brush or floss.

7. Fluoride is your friend. Fluoride helps prevent cavities. Be sure to brush with fluoride toothpaste, and rinse with fluoride mouthwash.

8. Pointy brushes reach tiny places. Interproximal brushes (sometimes called proxa brushes or interdental brushes) are cone-shaped and come in very handy for reaching spots around your braces that standard brushes can’t.

9. Find the floss for you. Regular floss works for some patients, but others find it easier to work with a floss threader, which helps you get the floss into tight places. Other patients like an all-in-one product called Superfloss, which comes with a stiff end for easy threading, a spongy section for cleaning wide spaces, and regular floss for narrow spaces.

10. Make time for the pros. It’s your job to take care of the everyday cleaning. But make sure to visit your dentist regularly while in treatment, to get the deep, thorough cleaning that only a professional can provide. You just got braces at Sylvania & Lambertville Orthodontics and the orthodontist has informed you that over the next several months you will want to avoid eating anything sticky, hard, crunchy, or chewy. What does this leave for you to eat? Lettuce? Nothing?

Luckily, there was someone else wondering the same thing when she first got braces! Brenda Waterman, 13, decided she was going to find a way to have her cake and eat it too, so she created a variety of “braces-friendly” recipes that allow you to enjoy your favorite treats without interfering with your orthodontic care! Her cookbook, “The Braces Cookbook: Recipes you (and your Orthodontist) will Love,” gives patients a variety of delicious recipes, safe to eat with braces; plus additional tips and advice for packing lunches, what to eat at parties, and braces-friendly restaurant dishes! There’s even a section with tips for dealing with the soreness that can occur when your braces or appliance are adjusted. Enjoy the foods you love – even with braces!

Wonderful Waffles

Forget the recipe that came with your waffle iron – this recipe will redefine fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. The secret to delicious waffles is letting the batter "sit" for five minutes before pouring into the waffle iron. Top cooked waffles with syrup, jam, fresh fruit or even whip cream. Makes about 5 servings!

Preheat your waffle iron according to the directions. You may want to lightly spray it with vegetable oil before heating.
• 3 cups flour
• 2 Tbl + 2 tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp salt
• 2 Tbl sugar
• 4 cups milk
• 4 eggs
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil
In a large bowl, whisk (or use electric mixer on low) together all ingredients. Let batter sit for about five minutes to activate the baking powder.

When waffle iron is ready, pour about 1/3 cup of batter onto each of the four squares (experiment with your iron – you don't want the batter overflowing). Gently close the cover and set your timer as the manufacturer suggests. Do not lift the cover while they bake. When done, carefully lift one edge with a flat spatula and pull the waffle away from the iron. Keep waffles warm on a plate under a clean dishtowel while the others bake.

Sylvania, Lambertville Orthodontics - Correcting an Open Bite

Straightening teeth and aligning jaws defines what orthodontics achieves. But Sylvania & Lambertville Orthodontics believes a good orthodontist needs to always keep their eyes open for any health issue that could affect the teeth and jaws. For example, dark circles under the eyes and nasal congestion might indicate an allergy or sinus problem, it could also indicate enlarged tonsils or adenoids, which would makes difficult to get the proper amount of sleep. One of the first things our doctors will ask if they see these signs are: “Do you have trouble breathing through your nose?” Children who can’t breathe adequately through their nose compensate by breathing through their mouth which can cause the lower jaw to fall forward. This posture can affect jaw and tooth position. Many times before starting orthodontic treatment, a patient will be referred to an ENT to assess whether tonsils or adenoids need to be removed. In some cases, a palate expander can help open the airway, too.

For our patient Haylee, a prescription spray took care of the nasal swelling and then we corrected her Class III open bite that had developed because of airway issues. Correcting an open bite is one of the more difficult orthodontic problems to correct, but Haylee was very diligent wearing the prescribed elastics necessary for correction. She now owns a beautiful smile – well, actually her mom says she owns it! She said orthodontic treatment is an expensive investment and she expects Haylee to do her part by taking care of her invisible retainer and being a good brusher and flosser. Mom loves the fact that she gets a dividend on her investment every time Haylee smiles.

Shane has lots to Smile about!

Shane had the misfortune to fall on a wooden block when he was 18 months old and push his baby teeth on the bottom forward. Unfortunately, as his permanent lower incisors erupted, they followed suit.

His pediatric dentist, Dr. Jennifer Zoll, referred him to Sylvania & Lambertville Orthodontics when he was ten because his two front teeth were trapped behind his lower teeth. This Class III bite can cause extensive problems with not just the teeth, but also the jaw. Early treatment (Phase I) is necessary in most cases to adjust the front teeth so the upper teeth fit over the lower. Sometimes a palate expander is needed to create more upper jaw width or braces on a few of the upper teeth to make this adjustment. In Shane’s case, however, one of the simplest (and cheapest!) methods was used. He was given tongue depressors to use to push the top teeth forward. Shane even used his thumb when he was in the car to push on those teeth when he forgot to bring a tongue depressor.

We followed his progress carefully and Shane was able to achieve his goal. Once he accomplished this, it was just a matter of watching and waiting until his permanent teeth were in. His evaluation a year later showed a need for a palate expander along with a face mask to keep pulling the upper jaw forward. Shane was as complaint with orthodontic treatment as he was with tongue depressors and his mother is very pleased with his beautiful smile.

Cold and Flu Season is Here - Replace Your Toothbrush!

Fall is upon us, and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, we will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs are known to linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing

• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen

• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster

• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

My Life Behind Bars

Cindy is very comfortable with her clear, upper braces and recently made further headway by getting her lower braces put on. The way the upper and lower teeth come together dictates if all braces go on in the beginning or just the upper. In Cindy’s case, brackets on the lower teeth would have been more prone to breakage because of the way her top teeth come together with the lower teeth. Since the top usually take longer to straighten, this way of doing things doesn’t slow down treatment at all.

Cindy continues to enjoy many activities and she recently even found romance under the stars this summer! While enjoying the music at Centennial Terrace with a group of friends, she was introduced to the drummer in the band. He asked her to dance and since then, they’ve been singing a sweet duet together. After their second date, she mentioned something about her braces and was delighted to find that he hadn’t noticed that she even had them. Just goes to show that straightening your teeth as an adult definitely doesn’t get in the way of an active social life.

Having braces, a palate expander, or a MARA requires even more time in the bathroom and diligence with a toothbrush. At every appointment, we monitor oral hygiene and award a wooden token for good brushing. Patients can also receive a token for not missing appointments, not breaking anything on their braces, and for wearing their official Drs. Simon, Haerian & Ludwig t-shirt to their appointment. Although missing appointments and frequent breakage are what slows down orthodontic treatment; it’s poor oral hygiene that can literally stop it in its tracks.

We constantly encourage brushing by awarding a wooden token and making sure they know exactly how to brush under and on top of each bracket to keep it shiny and free of sticky plaque. The wooden tokens can be exchanged for something fun in our Prize Case or saved up for gift cards to Target. Assistants that notice exceptional brushing give that patient a special entry form to fill out so they can also enter The Good Brusher’s Contest.

A few Halloween safety tips

Trick-or-treat! In the spirit of October’s sweet and spooky holiday, Halloween, we would like to remind all of our patients to be safe while celebrating with friends and family. The American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, has provided trick-or-treaters with some tips for a ghoulishly good time.

A few Halloween safety guidelines:
• Young children should always be accompanied by an adult
• Carry a flashlight
• Wear a light-colored or reflective costume
• Choose face paint over masks for young ghosts and goblins
• Have an adult inspect all treats before the children dig in

Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through orthodontic treatment. If you happen to damage your braces, please give our staff a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved over the phone.

CJ's New Smile to Last a Lifetime

C. J. is down to just wearing an invisible retainer to maintain his beautiful smile and was nice enough to share some of his thoughts on his orthodontic experience. One of the first things to come up was that the assistants and the scheduling coordinators were really nice. He also said he liked the fact that at one of his last appointments before getting his braces off, the doctor had said “his teeth looked good but we want perfect.” Instead of being bummed about not getting his braces off asap, C. J. felt good knowing that when they did, the best possible result had been achieved.

C. J.’s mom confirmed that the time and the money invested in his smile was worth it, too. She said C. J. had friends whose orthodontic treatment was a little less but that the results were noticeably less, too. Both C. J. and mom are happy to know their orthodontic investment is one that can last a lifetime!

Kristle's New Smile

I met Kristle and her mother at their Post Orthodontic Consult. This appointment is reserved for a review from the start of treatment all the way to our “photo finish.” We also talk about what it takes to maintain that smile a lifetime. I do these appointments twice a week in the office and always enjoy showcasing a patient’s smile and, every once in a while, I meet someone who’s story needs to be shared.

Kristle’s mom is a teacher in the field of special education. She is a very articulate, personable woman and she is also profoundly deaf. Her own mother was determined she be at home in a hearing world and worked with her an extra three hours every day on academics, speech, and social skills. When she gave birth to a child of her own with perfect hearing, she was just as determined as her own mother that her little girl be exposed to the one thing she couldn’t provide – music.

Kristle’s grandmother slipped easily into her roll as teacher once again with Kristle as her rapt pupil, only this time focusing on music. Singing came easily for Kristle as she was born with the gift of perfect pitch. She also plays the recorder, piano, and excels at the violin. As a freshman in high school, she sings opera at a college level and plans on pursuing musical studies in college. Kristle and her mother are the only two members of the family who practice the art of signing. Both participate in a deaf choir to bring music to life by virtue of signing, facial expression, and body language.

There is no doubt that Kristle comes from a line of women with fortitude and foresight and Kristle reflects those characteristics, too. With the loving “polish” from mom and Grandma there is absolutely no doubt that Kristle is bound to shine brightly!

Little Time - Big Results!

Daniel’s mom was concerned because his two front teeth were in front of his lower teeth but his upper laterals were trapped behind the lower teeth.
She felt this problem would require years and years of orthodontic treatment to correct. Instead, only18 months later, Daniel is sporting a perfect smile!

They both have been pleased with their visits to our office (although neither one cared very much for the palate expander used to create enough room on top for all his teeth.) From the friendly service of the scheduling coordinators to the expertise of the doctors and assistants in the clinic – treatment moved forward very efficiently. Both mom and Daniel love his beautiful smile and the fact it was done so quickly just gives them even more time to enjoy it!

A Patient's Inspiration To Pursue a Career In Orthodontics

Kyu walked into our office with the idea of changing the way his teeth looked and ended up changing careers. Kyu worked in the building next door to our office in Sylvania as an engineer, so coming in for appointments was a breeze. As he came in for appointments, he talked extensively to Dr. Haerian about the mechanics and biophysics of orthodontic treatment. He was intrigued with the similar vocabulary engineering and orthodontics shared –torque, abutment, bridge, etc.

At the same time, he had been discussing careers with his cousin who had decided to pursue a medical field and was considering dentistry. Kyu came to the conclusion that he, too, would enjoy working hands on with people and that a degree in orthodontics would allow him to apply some of his engineering skills to patients instead of paper. Since then, he has been on the fast track to earning a degree in dentistry before pursuing a specialty in orthodontics. Dr. Haerian is pleased with Kyu’s smile, but he’s even more pleased to know that he inspired Kyu to follow his dream.

Peggy's Story in Braces

Over the course of time, Peggy had undergone orthodontic treatment two other times before deciding to try one more time at Sylvania Orthodontics. Lucky number three turned out to be her winning number as she can now chew comfortably on both sides rather than just on the left. An added “age defying bonus” turned out to be a fuller upper lip after treatment.

Age 7 is the magic number for an orthodontic check-up

Many parents assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to see us for a consultation, only to discover treatment would have been much easier if started earlier. Did you know the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven?

That’s right—seven.

Ok, so what’s so great about age seven, you ask? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for our doctors to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites and open bites can be detected.

Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and are detrimental to good oral hygiene. So, if your child is nearing his or her seventh birthday, give us a call to schedule an appointment.

Braces today are cool and—many would say—even fun. These were among the findings of a 2010 nationwide survey of moms whose children are going through or have had orthodontic treatment. New technologies, advanced computer software, color options, and even popular celebrities—Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Danny Glover, Serena Williams—sporting stylish braces are making orthodontic treatment more comfortable, fashionable and cool for today’s teens.

The study, conducted on behalf of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists for February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month, found 86 percent of moms reporting that braces are cooler today than when they were children. Sixty-nine percent of moms also said wearing braces makes their children feel cool, and 81 percent reported their children’s experience with orthodontic treatment as either positive or extremely positive.

Different color options and the ability to change colors, for example, provide exciting ways for young patients to customize appearances. That enthusiasm helps them to feel good about their orthodontic treatment with us, and may contribute to the success of treatment.

Invisalign® tips, from Sylvanie & Lambertville Orthodontics

Many people know that Invisalign is a great solution to braces if you don't want to experience the look and feel of traditional metal braces. What few people know, though, is that just like traditional braces, Invisalign requires proper care to work effectively. Good oral hygiene is highly important, even when you are wearing something in your mouth that you can take out to eat with. It's still likely that your aligners can build up plaque if not treated properly. When wearing your Invisalign aligners, we want you to ask yourself the following questions:

1. Am I eating with my aligners on? - These aligners are removable and should be taken out when you eat.

2. Am I drinking anything other than water with my aligners on? - Though it's not necessary for you to take out your aligners while you drink, think about how sticky soda is. If you take out your aligners when drinking a soda, you have a better chance of keeping your aligners clean.

3. Am I brushing before putting the trays on? - The aligners have both an inside and outside. Keeping the outside clean is easy. Keeping the inside clean is also simple: just make sure you've brushed your teeth before putting the trays on.

Easing into Braces

Some people have an innate fear of having work done on their teeth. Sometimes it stems from a traumatic visit to a dentist as a youngster where he or she had teeth poked, prodded, and possibly even pulled. Many times, these invasions of the mouth are done to young patients without any explanation. The probe or pliers might get the job done and fix the physical problems but, in its wake, create an ongoing mental anguish over subsequent dental visits.

It’s easy to spot the nervous patient, whether they are 7 or 70. However, no matter what the age of the patient, we set them at ease by going slowly and thoroughly explaining the exam process. We emphasize that we are only looking in the mouth to assess health of the gums and position of the teeth. Once we gain their trust and they begin orthodontic treatment, we work hard to keep it by noting on their chart to explain what is to be done first and also to be extra gentle. We usually add extra time for each appointment for the nervous patient so they don’t feel unduly anxious or rushed.

We treat all our patients with kindliness and courtesy. Our goal is to have our patients looking forward to each appointment as a step towards reaching their goal of a great smile. By providing a little extra TLC, even our fearful patients can leave the office with at least a little smile on their face!

Smile–June is National Smile Month!

It’s June already! Where does the time go?

Our doctors and team are excited to tell you June marks National Smile Month, a great time to remind our patients to brush, floss, practice good nutrition at home (and over the summer) to avoid cavities and gum disease, among other dental health issues.

After all, there’s more and more evidence that suggests folks with gum disease are more at risk for serious health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and strokes.

Here are a few easy steps you can improve your oral health at home:

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
* Floss everyday to clean between your teeth and braces
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during orthodontic treatment.
* Visit your general dentist regularly (usually every six months apart).

My Life Behind "Bars", Part II

We continue our My Life Behind "Bars" series this week with Nancy's story below:

Nancy has the distinction of being our oldest patient in treatment at this time. Orthodontics was not something on the radar for Nancy as she approached her 75th birthday, but her daughter, Lee, persuaded her to explore her dental options. Lee has been very satisfied with her own smile since undergoing orthodontic treatment with us and was determined to see what we could do for her mom.

Lee knew from taking bite wing x-rays of her mom years ago while in dental assisting school that her teeth were “curious.” Nancy had retained a baby tooth for 65 years before finally needing to have it extracted. After that procedure, her adult tooth finally decided to join the party, but then proceeded to come in way up on the gum line!

Nancy was sure that since her teeth were so terribly crowded, she’d need adult teeth extracted which she really didn’t want. However, after reviewing her x-rays and doing an examination, we feel we can align everything AND bring that wayward tooth in line, too. She was excited about having her teeth straight for the first time in her life, and started her orthodontic treatment with upper, clear braces on April 6, 2010.

For Nancy, life is always interesting and she has found orthodontic treatment to be very interesting, indeed. She was fascinated with having her brackets put on using the “indirect method” and likes the fact that we utilize cutting edge technology. She has also been amazed at how relatively easy the process has been and surprised she can be so relaxed in a dental chair. Nancy has an incredibly sunny outlook on life and enjoys making a statement with her “Braces are Beautiful T-shirt.” Her only challenge so far has been eating sandwiches because her bite has been changing so much. She’s dealing with that by cutting her sandwich into bite size pieces and eating them with a fork. There’s no doubt that she’s looking forward to the day when she’s finished with treatment and can bite into a big old hamburger at Red Robin’s with her straight teeth and perfect bite!

My Life Behind "Bars", Part I

For the next two weeks, we will follow two adult patients from the start of their orthodontic adventure to its conclusion. Periodically, we’ll check in to see how they’re doing and even post some photos of their progress! Stay tuned for Nancy's story next week.

Cindy came into our office on February 23, 2010 for her free consultation to see what it would take to create the perfect smile. For her, deciding that our office was the right place for orthodontic treatment was both professional (she’s a nurse so understands first hand how patients like to be treated) and intuitive. For the past two years she’s been on a journey of self-improvement after spending almost 20 years taking care of everyone else. She did an assessment of her life and decided the first step in the process was to take better care of her physical body, to feel good, and to be happy. She joined a gym, changed her way of eating, allowed more restorative sleeping time, and most importantly – “upgraded” her thinking.

She knows a positive attitude is what keeps you moving forward with a smile on your face. (And you want that smile to be one you’re proud of!) Cindy feels that devoting two years of her life to straightening her teeth will add even more value to the self image she’s been working on.

We started Cindy’s upper braces on March 11th and she is amazed at the change she can already see. She said 40 years of crooked and tight fitting teeth have made for difficult flossing. Now, however, she can actually “breathe” through her front teeth! She opted for clear brackets and gets many comments on them (well, if people notice them, that is!) Some people think she’s having a mid-life crisis but she knows what she’s experiencing is a wonderful mid-life revival.

Creating a perfect smile fit perfectly into Cindy’s plan for self-improvement. Helping her achieve that goal gives us a perfect reason to smile, too.

Summertime Oral Hygiene Tips from Sylvania & Lambertville Orthodontics

Just because summer is here and you're slathering on the sunscreen doesn't mean you can lighten up on the toothpaste! Summertime, and the living is easy, but we don't want you to take it TOO easy in keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Please keep your smile as bright as the summer sun by frequent flossing and diligent brushing.

One of the best things about summer is the loosening up of daily routines. One of the worst things about summer for your oral health is the loosening up of daily routines! It's so easy to be having a great time right up until the minute you plop yourself in bed for the night. However, it is so important to brush your teeth before resting up for the next fun-filled day. So, if you find yourself drifting off for the night, you need to: STOP! DROP! and BRUSH! That means: STOP shutting those eyes, DROP your feet to the floor and head to the bathroom and BRUSH. Afterwards, you will drift off to a pleasant, restful sleep filled with dreams of beautiful, shiny smiles!

Summer is traditionally vacation time. To make it easier than ever to keep your teeth clean, many drugstores now carry disposable toothbrushes and dental picks. These won't replace a thorough job of brushing and flossing but it's an easy alternative for people on the go this summer.

We announced our video contest last week, but it is not the only way you can earn some truly awesome prizes here at Sylvania & Lambertville Orthodontics!

Julie and her son, Matt, both had orthodontic treatment at Sylvania & Lambertville Orthodontics. At the end of Matt’s treatment, unbeknown to him, mom entered his photos in our Perfect Smile Contest. When all the votes were in, he walked away as one of our winners. For Julie, her winning moment came when someone commented: “You have a beautiful smile.” It was the first time in her life that anyone had ever said those words to her, but we’re sure it won’t be the last.

There's no reason to be afraid of orthodontic treatment, one of our patients explains

Visits to the orthodontist are feared by some, but as one of our patients explains, there is no reason to be afraid!

Denise, at age 14, shows a maturity beyond her years as she shares her reasons for her comments. Her goal is to help anyone considering orthodontic treatment to not be afraid of the process. She said her friends told her horror stores about how bad it was going to be and she found that not to be valid at all. Her only minor inconveniences were being sore sometimes after a wire change. The solution of having soup on the menu after her appointment (or better yet, ice cream!) took care of the problem. She loves the way her smile looks and can confidently say it was so worth it.

Cleaner, More Compact Orthodontic Braces at Sylvania & Lambertville Orthodontics, A Patient Experience

Actually, Lexie didn’t think her teeth were bad at all – she just didn’t like the space between the upper two front teeth. However, after her initial consultation at Sylvania & Lambertville Orthodontics she found out that besides the spacing issue, her bite was way off on the left side. Turns out, her upper left cuspid and bicuspid had never erupted.

She started orthodontic treatment on March 10, 2007 and got her braces off on December 15, 2009. We had estimated her treatment time as 24 months, but the teeth we had to “help” come in weren’t on the same time schedule. The goal is always to achieve a finish as close to perfect as possible, and Lexie certainly did her part by wearing her elastic bands to fine tune her bite.

She noticed while she was in braces that some other kids in orthodontic treatment elsewhere had two rubber ligatures on each bracket to hold the wire in place. She liked the fact that her brackets utilized a miniature mechanical door that opened and closed for that purpose. She felt it was much easier to keep her braces clean because of the compact, metal brackets. She also is a fan of the clear invisible retainer she uses now for her upper teeth vs. the metal wire Hawley retainer that some kids use.

Now that Lexie is in the 18 month retention phase, she knows that even though it took a little longer than estimated, it was certainly worth the wait. She’s also happy to no longer have a space between her two front teeth AND have a beautiful bite, too.

Six Months Less Time In Braces - A Patient's Experience at Sylvania & Lambertville Orthodontics

Megan started orthodontic treatment at Sylvania & Lambertville Orthodontics on July 10, 2008 and had her braces removed on January 20, 2010. What’s so special about that? How about the fact that we estimated it would take 24 months to straighten her teeth and correct her bite and it only took 18 months to obtain that perfect smile?!

The average length of treatment in our office is right around 24 months so there was no error in our estimate. What helped speed her treatment along turned out to be two factors. First, mom tried to schedule her next appointment as close as possible to the earliest recommended time for her next visit. Since the usual length of time between visits is 10 to 12 weeks, she opted for appointments closer to the 10 week mark. Many times that meant taking a less popular morning appointment time to achieve that goal.

The second factor was totally in Megan’s control. She actually followed the instructions given at each visit! For her, that meant wearing small elastic bands fastened to small hooks on her upper and lower braces to correct the bite. She also changed the elastics frequently during the day since they lose tension from being wet and stretched.

Regularly scheduled appointments + no missed appointments + conscientious and consistent elastic wear = six months LESS TIME in braces. Congratulations, Megan, on achieving your winning smile in record time!
